Fungal taxonomy / Taxonomie fongique Isolates of Diaporthe–Phomopsis from weeds and their effect on soybean

چکیده
Greenhouse and laboratory studies were conducted to determine the identity and pathogenicity of Diaporthe– Phomopsis species complex recovered from eight weed species. The identifications of the eight isolates representing four taxa, including two apparently undescribed species of Phomopsis, were based on colony features in pure culture, morphology of alpha or beta-conidia, and internal transcribed spacer sequences. Of the eight isolates, Phomopsis sp. A. from Eclipta prostrata (eclipta), Phomopsis longicolla isolates from both Ipomoea lacunosa (pitted morning-glory) and Chamaesyce nutans (nodding spurge), and Diaporthe phaseolorum from Desmanthus illinoensis (Illinois bundle-flower) caused significant levels of infection on soybean hypocotyls, pods, and seeds. These four isolates from weed species also caused systemic infection of seed similar to the soybean isolate of P. longicolla. Diaporthe phaseolorum isolated from Caperonia palustris (Texasweed) and Aster exilis (slender aster), Phomopsis sp. B. from Sida spinosa (prickly sida), and Phomopsis sp. A from Polygonum aviculare (prostrate knotweed) were not pathogenic to soybean. This is the first demonstration that Phomopsis sp. A, P. longicolla, and D. phaseolorum isolated from eclipta, pitted morningglory, nodding spurge, and Illinois bundle-flower cause seed infection of soybean.

Resolving the Diaporthe species occurring on soybean in Croatia
Diaporthe (anamorph = Phomopsis) species are plant pathogens and endophytes on a wide range of hosts including economically important crops. At least four Diaporthe taxa occur on soybean and they are responsible for serious diseases and significant yield losses. Although several studies have extensively described the culture and morphological characters of these pathogens, their taxonomy has no...
متن کاملDraft genome sequence of Phomopsis longicolla isolate MSPL 10-6
Phomopsis longicolla is the primary cause of Phomopsis seed decay in soybean. This disease severely affects soybean seed quality by reducing seed viability and oil content, altering seed composition, and increasing frequencies of moldy and/or split beans. It is one of the most economically important soybean diseases. Here, we report the de novo assembled draft genome sequence of the P. longicol...
متن کاملA searchable database for the genome of Phomopsis longicolla (isolate MSPL 10-6)
Phomopsis longicolla (syn. Diaporthe longicolla) is an important seed-borne fungal pathogen that primarily causes Phomopsis seed decay (PSD) in most soybean production areas worldwide. This disease severely decreases soybean seed quality by reducing seed viability and oil quality, altering seed composition, and increasing frequencies of moldy and/or split beans. To facilitate investigation of t...
متن کاملDraft genome sequence of Diaporthe aspalathi isolate MS-SSC91, a fungus causing stem canker in soybean
Diaporthe aspalathi (Syn. Diaporthe phaseolorum var. meridionalis) is the causal agent of the southern stem canker (SSC) disease in soybean. This disease can kill plants from the middle to the end of the growing season resulting in severe yield loss. The mechanisms of SSC disease development and pathogen invasion of soybean are not fully understood. The genome sequence of D. aspalathi has not b...
متن کاملOccurence of Phomopsis Sp. on Achillea Millefolium
Throughout many years of studying mycopopulation of weeds, we have found fungi of the Diaporthe/ Phomopsis complex interesting to research. After years of examining plants of Achillea millefolium L., some of them exhibited symptoms of infection typical for Diaporthe/Phomopsis species. A. millefolium was usually found in uncultivated, pasture and forest flora, but also in or nearby sunflower fie...
